2020 repress - das album coco ist nun endlich als doppel-vinyl erhältlich und setzt da fort, wo parov stelar’s bisherige erfolgsalben aufgehört haben. auf der anderen seite entwickelt er seinen sound aber konsequent weiter und fügt seinen bewährten jazzigen klängen spannende, neue stilelemente hinzu. die zwei vinyle des doppelalbums sind als unterteilung zwischen den eher tanzbareren und den zum hören gedachten tracks zu sehen. diese grenze verschwindet bei parov stelars aktuellen kompositionen allerdings zusehends und das album bildet so weniger ein zweigeteiltes werk als vielmehr einen homogenen fluss an nummern, die stetig an tanzfaktor gewinnen. der musiker selbst sieht das ganze als »buch für den musikalischen leser«, in dem es ganz klar eine klassische aufteilung in einleitung, mittelteil und schluss gibt. durch die schnelllebigkeit unserer zeit und das »reinhören« in alben geht die auseinandersetzung mit weniger plakativen songs verloren. »coco« ist von parov stelar hier als gegenposition gedacht.

red red wine is a compilation album compiled by the jamaican producer brother dan, better known by his stage name dandy. the album consists of some of his most popular productions like tony tribe’s “red red wine” and israelites “games people play”. the reggae version of the neil diamond title song became a hit in the uk in the summer of 69. with his own showcase label downtown dandy entered the music world, including his popular release “reggae in your jeggae”.

hot shots of reggae is an recording on which a bunch of popular reggae songs are brought together. the album was originally released in the autumn of 1970 and compiled by the legendary chinese-jamaican producer leslie kong. he had enjoyed many hits in in europe and selected some of the true pearls from the reggae music to shine on the album. the album includes the maytals hit monkey man, the sparkling so much love by joe white and the fine rythms of ken boothe’s freedom street. the influential producer leslie kong once discovered jimmy cliff and recorded him on his own record label beverley’s. in 1962 he recorded bob marley’s first single and through the 60’s het became known as the producer of many big artists, like desmond dekker and joe higgs. he died of a heart attack, at the age of 38, in august 1971.

gents & dandy s are finally back with a 3rd limited 12- vinyl release and this time it s an artist ep by the hands of the greece, athens based achilleas dimitracopoulos, better known as fog. he s contributed to the house music movement since the late 90s and has previously released on labels like noir music, dieb audio, apparel music, seven music, and just recently suena hermosa. collaborations and remix work happened for kindimmer, patrick zigon or even kruse & nuernberg to name just a few.

tobias. returns to ostgut ton with his third full length eyes in the center and expands the musical narrative laid out by his helium sessions ep (o-ton, 2016). the berghain resident keeps exploring the vast modular synth-driven techno, experimental and ambient territories on a journey in-between genres. tobias freund is long established as an influential artist and has – since the early 1990s – been working as a professional producer, sound engineer, label owner and strictly live musician. besides his early solo projects (such as pink elln, metazone or phobia) he’s also been collaborating with dandy jack (as sieg Über die sonne), ricardo villalobos (as odd machine), max loderbauer (as nsi.), valentina berthelon (as recent arts) and atom tm to only name a few. with his vast experience, diverse output and interests, tobias. doesn’t tire to actively push against existing boundaries and explore new areas of electronic music.

last year saw casablanca-based cosmo records launch its most ambitious project todate, celebrating five years of cross-cultural collaboration. the three vinyl releasesfeatured producers such as san proper, radiq, pier bucci and dandy jack working with moroccan musicians to create a true fusion between modern electronics and ancient traditions. the purpose of cosmo has always been to find a natural meeting place between thesedistinct musical forms, bringing out the best strengths of each practice through real time spent together in the studio, where each artist can truly understand the other in a shared quest for sonic harmony. as such, this latest release marks a step forward in exploring this idea through a new series entitled cosmo jam. as the title suggests, the focus here is on live improvisation. in late 2014 parisian producers masomenos and vadim svoboda travelled to morocco and set up their equipment at the coda casablanca music center. they were joined by m’hamed el menjra playing bass, abdessamad boussahfa on violin and sanhaji on darbuka, and the ensuing jam sessions between these musicians now make their way on to vinyl. no editing or post-production took place – the music you hear on the record was created entirely in the moment. each track highlights the magic of a different instrument – on “be” menjra’s double bass comes twisting through effects processing and subtle distortion, meeting with a low-slung broken beat groove from the visiting french producers. sanhaji’s thrilling percussive flair on the darbuka flirts perfectly with the crisp programming of drums and bass on the uptempo “kaled” and the more laid-back “petit”. boussahfa’s violin makes for some of the most arresting moments on the release, meeting with intricate minimalist rhythms on “mon” and shining in the heart-rending ambience of “frere”. presented across two 12”s, this collection of six tracks tells a most honest account of how gifted artists from entirely different disciplines can find a common ground and create something truly unique. without any studio trickery to hide behind, this is the concept of cosmo records laid bare, and the results prove it is a concept worth exploring further.

philippe quenum returns to cadenza music with ‘solitaire’, some thirteen years after helping kick start the swiss label with the 2003 release ‘orange mistake’/ funky dandy’. this groundbreaking single, co-produced with luciano, has since become a landmark release, not just for the label, but also as the benchmark for the micro-house and minimal tech-house genre that developed over the decade. with a music career than spans back to the mid-80s (dancing in nyc as part of the breakdance troupe, the magnificent force), quenum found his forte with house music, both as a dj, and as a producer and label owner. setting up the access 58 label in 1998 as a platform for his music and collaborations, quenum has consistently released over the years for labels like crosstown rebels, soma, alphahouse, thema and trapez ltd. ‘solitaire’ finds quenum on fine form, on the lead track, dubby fx and bass shaking shots roll out over an urgent disco beat, muted brass and technoid stabs fire from all directions as the tension building pads flourish. shadowy forces are at play on ‘mystic’, discordant sounds echo and bellow over reverberating percussion and a dense back beat that fire into life with shuffling hi-hats. wrapping up this welcome return to the label is ‘mystery’, whipping snares and industrial clangs rumble over the urgent drums for more hypnotizing dancefloor work from philippe!
